$800 to Replace a Loose Gear knob

Hello....

Done a search and can't find the advice I need. My 6 speed manual gear shaft on my SS is loose. I have pulled apart and replaced the knob after the stealer quoted me, but found the shaft is in two pieces :hmmm: there is remnants of black stuff where it sits against the gearbox shifting shaft thing.

On a service with the stealer they quoted $800 to fix what was described as a loose gear knob. Are their any other options? Is something broken or missing

Cheaper to buy a billet shifter - if it's just the shifter that is the issue.

Same thing happened to me. The shaft broke away from the plate or something. And the plate had to be replaced.
Luckily it was still under warranty, I'm guessing yours has run out already?

$800....... Holy fark... I've heard of rip off before but thats crazy.

I'll write this response to help you perhaps find some use out of it but help others if they ever had an issue

Now, it depends on a few things and I figure I do know some of this stuff because you and I have the same car:
Is it just the knob? It has a locating part that sits in a slot in the shaft. It could quite simply have come up out of that. Simply rotate the knob around with a small amount of downward pressure and it should find the locating slot. The give it a bit of a tap with a rubber mallet over a blanket or something and all should be good. (I'm disgusted if this is the fault and holden quoted you $800 to do so).

Is is the shaft itself which has broken away from the linkage? This may be more expensive and the labour to fix this would still be high but sorry still not $800. And I'll give a reason in a minute. If the shaft has broken loose at the bottom (I find unlikely but my VE has thrown up some furffy's and think anything is possible) then the grab the actual shaft below the knob (Basically grab hold of the shaft where the leather boot is) and see if it is the part moving. If the knob stays tight but moves when you grab the shaft then that is the problem.

I had a ripshifter put in my car. They basically have to take the whole assembly out, unbolt the exhaust - technically not a hard thing but an involved thing.My dealer installed mine for me and charged me $100. I dont have my shifter anymore as we had to take it because of some gearbox issues. I would certainly recommend short shifter to fix the slushy VE box. But I am actually going to get a full replacement one.

Hmmmm... might be interested, Bonners - what's it like compared to a billet shifter? Have you had a chance to sample one? Would appear to be a bit of a saving over a billet, if the quality and feel is comparable.

Tin, we have simply decided to take a plunge. I have tried a ripshifter and a hurst. The thing we like about this unit is that it's a complete replacement. Still cheaper than a ripshifter and about the same as a hurst.

Ripshifter that's all you need to know will fix it and feel alot better too
