98 VT 5L wont flash DTC codes

Recently bought a project car 98 VT SS 5L has check engine light on always while driving, drives fine no obvious issues. I cannot get the car to display the fault codes. i bridge terminals 5 and 6, turn the key on and the check engine light just stays illuminated.
anybody experience something similar or have any ideas?
