Hey guys, got a 96 vs commodore equipe. The AC compressor has seized up and is holding the belt causing me a no start issue. My question is, can I bypass the idler pulley and remove the AC entirely or will that **** everything?
P.s. limited mechanical knowledge and it's my first car so I don't wanna spend too much on any potential fixes

Yes, you just run a shorter belt.

Can I leave the compressor inactive or would I have to remove it entirely?

If you’ve installed the shorter belt as shown in post #3, then the ac compressor can’t be turned by the engine. As such the compress is just sitting there doing nothing...

Maybe the ac compressor clutch is using some battery juice if commanded to engage. If that bothers you, disconnect the plug from the ac pressure switch and the ac clutch can’t activate saving some batter electrons.

As for removing the ac compressor, you can‘t legally do that unless you're licences to handle and service ac gas. The oils may also be carcinogenic, I’m not sure but don’t learn through poisoning yourself.

Best to leave it alone and save yourself the effort of removal.

Leave the comp on it will help keep the system clean by not having it exposed to the environment. You or someone else might want to have A/C down the track.

It will run with seized compressor...impressive smoke show untill belt snaps or flies off.

Take belt off see if it starts/runs ok...if good go get exxy non-ac belt.

Leave compressor on in case system is still gassed.
