I got a confusing email from JVC NZ who stated in the email that i wont need a harness between the steering wheel controls and the head unit. They reckon that all that is needed is the 3.5mm jack and a little soldering by a car audio specialist.
So am now completely confused as to what i need.

True story depending on which JVC you have... Which is?

Steering wheel controls in commodores are done via 2 wires. You will need to put one of these to earth and the other goes to the JVC. It can then be programmed to understand which button does what.

This won't work on later model canbus vehicles but works great on vehicles like the commodore which uses a resistive ladder.

You believe that the 3.5mm jack and solder can be done? I might wait for the head unit to arrive and just take it to a auto sparky and see if they can confirm either way.

Most people don't know and just sell you the harness.

No. On the back of the unit there will be two socket inputs. One is a 2.5mm socket marked "Mic" for the microphone if its a Bluetooth unit and the other will be marked "REM" or "W/R" for steering wheel remote. In this instance, the two wires get soldered onto a 3.5mm mono jack and plugged into that.
