So I have a consistent clunk and occasionally a grinding noise at approximately the 1:00 mark when I turn the wheel. I'm fairly certain it's the steering rack, which was a reconditioned one I got about 2 1/2 years ago.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with new aftermarket racks? I'm not sure I want to go with another reconditioned unit if possible.

Cheers

thought after markets were reconditioned

can you buy new after this many years on ?

you sure the grinding isnt the pump ?

does the noise go away if you change the steering oil ?

the racks in this model by forum posts seem to be a fault or need replacing

you get what you pay for

I used a Prestige Power Steering rack in my WH.. They are in Thomastown (Melbourne), but there are many specialist shops stock their change-overs.
All good as far as function and price.

I'm talking about ones like this, which claim to be brand new aftermarket units:
Holden Commodore Vtii VX VY Power Steering Rack Brand NEW | eBay

I'm sure it's not the pump as it's a very physical noise, metal on metal, as though something has come loose. Most of the time the steering is behaving fine and there is no noise, it's only when the wheel is turned to approximately that 1 o'clock mark that I hear the noise.

Wow, $300. Makes the new genuine VZ Power Steer Rack from GMH I still have in the Carton worth a bit more.
Glad I kept it.

Could still be the Pump and could also be ball joints or tie rod ends, pump bearing, also wheel bearing or movement in the wheel bearing causing grinding of the brake pads, and how old are the pads ? and are the bearings firm ?

My Son had a problem similar so he Duct Taped his Phone under the front and moved the car around on the driveway.

Found more than one problem.

I'm not sure about the wheel bearings, so I'll have to check them. Pads are roughly the same age as the rack itself - about 2.5 years old, with probably less than 20k on them as the car hasn't done all that much driving. I also did tie rod ends when I did the rack and I'm fairly sure they're still fine. I'll get a friend over for a second opinion some time soon.
