Turned the air-conditioner on today and its not blowing cold just warm. Is there anything I can do to correct the problem or is this a job for the air conditioning professionals.
How about replacing the compressor is this a job we can do at home.

Could mean the air con gas is low. Air con will not start if low on gas

Can change the compressor if you want, still need gas and still need to expell gas also

Best thing, try a recharge of the air con and they will need some die and see how it goes.

How does on go about checking to see if the clutch is engaged, sounds like a good place to start.

Easy, start your motor and turn the AC off ,pop the bonnet and check the compressor, the outside of the pulley where the belt runs should be turning, the center of the pulley should be stationary. Switch the AC on, if the clutch has engaged the center section of the pulley should now be spinning as well. If not check the AC fuse.

But low gas will void that as system will not engage the air compressor to protect the system if the gas is low.
No gas or low gas and wont engage

Best bet is to go to an A/C shop and have it serviced ($200-$300). They will refill the gas with dye and get it running again, test for obvious leaks and send you on your way to come back in a few weeks to re-assess. If it's a major leak you will run out of gas quickly but they will know what needs doing, if it's a slow leak they will still be able to pin point it and price up the repair. Could be any of the major components or something simple like the compressor hose seals or fill port valves. Best passing air con diagnosis and repair to the professionals.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, this Friday its booked in for the air conditioner service.
Good news is the compressor clutch is working fine so here's hoping it has a leak.

Get someone else to on/off the a/c while you watch. It should flick on for a second before flicking off because of low gas.
