Alloytec 190 Water Pump cost

My SV6 is in with Holden getting a new A/C compressor and dryer fitted . I used them because they were cheaper ( $1200 ) than the other place I got a quote ( $1400 )
While it's being done they ring me to tell me my water pump is leaking and ( with a very sad tone ) advise it will cost me $1100

Now I do believe the Allotec pump is harder than the VT one I have previously replaced ? Is it a fair price and can I do it myself?
I have changed the spark plugs on this engine before so I have had the plennum off ( though it feels like a while ago and it's rather vague )

No way should I spend $1100 , am i right?

It was a few years ago, but coolant flush, water pump, radiator cap and neck, three farnarkling attempts and disputed costs with dealer cost me $854.
That was my last visit with a Holden service centre.

$1,100 to replace a water pump, they must be tripping on some really good ****.
I've replaced mine twice in the last 15 years.
Takes about an hour to do the job if you have everything you need on hand for the job.
Make sure you have a torque wrench and the torque specs for the bolts.

I have a torque wrench but not the specs.

after market pump costs $91 retail premium, or $76 for cheapie
Add $53 for new coolant
FWIW I have never used a torque wrench on my cars

Never used one for a water pump replacement on the trusty old Holden red 6 but when it comes to these alloy blocks I don't trust myself to not strip a thread so I torque everything to factory specs to be on the safe side.

Add in some coolant and a couple of hours labour does not =$1100

Yes, what robbery. Heart attack at the thought. Loosen the 4 x 10mm on the pulley. Pull off the serpentine belt. Take off the pulley. Few quick bolts around the pump, go back the other way and you are done. Here, a pump is $50 and the Dex-Cool $20, 4 bottles of distilled water $2. You can take the pump down to this machine shop I know too and they change the seals and bearing for $30.

$1100...never go there again.

Should fix it, but, cause if water is leaking it is going in the bearing and it may seize.

Dispute that charge for sure! Ask for a breakdown of the charges and then have him justify it. Watch him squirm.
