I have just put a vr 3.8 into my hilux and having issues with the alternator wiring as I have hooked up the big red wire and the white wire together and the brown goes no where and it keeps draining my batteries over night even tho it is charging at 14 volts . What have I done wrong .cheers

Have you got the voltage sensing wire connected? There's 2 pins on the plug 1 goes to the charge light and the other goes to battery +, I'm pretty sure it needs both to function.

I could be wrong but don't you need to ground the alternator as well.
one would hope the engine is grounded...as that's what the alt is mounted to!

brown wire goes to the battery warning light. i personally hook up the "white wire" to ignition power, not constant.

why not constant?

Vk sl is correct. By having it wired to constant, the alternator is continuously switched on. Which would be fine if it was turning.
