alternator??

Hey y'all!
A mate of mine has a tv commodore 2000 I think with 240,000 on the clock. He was driving the other night and his alternator light came on the the cluster (fuel and tacho) went to zero and a few of the lights came on. I wasn't there he was just telling me the story. What are the symptoms on an alternator failure? Apparently it has chewed up 2 brand new batteries in the last few days also.. Hope this is enough info!

Sounds like the alternator. Could also be the main wire coming out of it, it's the big yellow one. If it is all burnt looking on the end where the insulation starts, you will need to cut it back a bit and fit a new terminal.

The symptoms you described are those of a faulty regulator. Just replace the regulator on the alternator, assuming it is a V6, an LS1 is a little more difficult. Check the voltage at the battery with then engine running, it should be around 14.2-14.4 volts.

Everything you described is a symptom of alt failure, especially alt light coming on and going through 2 new batteries in a few days

Most auto electricians will do reco units on an exchange basis, not sure on price as it depends on where you go

Or you just go get your own reco'd for like $150

Agree, voltage regulator replacement is the easiest and cheapest next step. The brushes on the voltage regulator wear down over time and need to be replaced. Is your mate's battery on all the time?
