over time the outer layer of the power cable (insulation) will rub against the metal of the chassis. Because the chassis of the car is the negative you will have the positive (power cable) touching the negative (the chase) which will cause a short, and to stop damage the fuses will blow. If a fuse fails to blow it will cause damage to the car.
So if you drill a hole in the firewall go to Repco or alike and get a grommet to place in the whole to stop wear and tear on the cable.
