Using the specified 10w30. In times of lower KMs used 15-40 in Summer and 10w-30 in winter.
Oil is changed regularly every 4 months and KMs are maybe 15-16k per year..

As the cooler weather is coming along was thinking of going to a lighter oil say 5w-30.

Has 10w-30 in it now but on a cooler mornings have noticed engine clatter on startup.

Any ideas, views or suggestions.?

My suggestion is, put what you think is suited...

Every thread relating to oil turns to crap real quick with so many varying opinions on which one is better than the next

No making much sense so far.
15W40 is thicker than what you are using now, and 5W30 is even thinner again. Why have you switched to a thinner oil?
Most people recommend using thicker oil as the car gets older, not thinner oil like you suggest.
Maybe you went too thin and made it more noisy??
Personally I would use at least 10w40 in that engine if it had not been rebuilt yet.

Probably chain tensioners taking a while to pump up then. Not a major issue in my experience as my old VE SV6 did it from about 200k kms to the 330k kms before it was put off the road. Replacing the chain tensioner/s will probably fix the problem.
