Explains why your ecotec blows blue smoke then, doesn't it?
Seeings the engine has done around 500,000 klms, I dare say THAT is why it blows blue smoke.
An engine/transmission in good condition has no problem revving as designed by the manufacturer as far as I'm concerned.
My comment was more to let others know that if you select 1 on the shifter and go hell for leather, that it will change to second gear prior to blowing up.
Similarly, if you are in neutral or park and hold it flat to the floor, the in built rev limiter kicks in prior to engine damage.
Obviously both the above are not recommended for everyday driving!
