WH statesman 5.7
Model: E4N71B
Type : Four forward speeds and reverse, epicyclic gear trains with clutch operated lock up torque converter.
Operation: Electronically controlled automatic, hydrolic

Four speed overdrive unit with gear selection controlled by an electronic control unit. The torque converter has a lock up capability operated by a clutch within the converter, engaging at various speeds which are programmed into the control unit. When the clutch is applied, the driven member of the torque converter is locked to the driving member creating positive engagement and when the clutch is released the normal characteristics of the torque converter are used to drive the vehicle using oil as the driving medium.

An additional epicyclic gear train in the front of the transmission combines with a direct clutch, a one way clutch, a brake band and an overdrive cancel solenoid to provide the overdrive ratio

also found this at google, re the jatco E4N71B

Automatics suck, but there are some people who still insist on buying them. All automatic Z31s used the 4N71B transmission. Change the fluid every so often, and check the level every time you change your engine oil. Also, if you overheat your car for whatever reason and it has an automatic, CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID IMMEDIATELY!!! If you don't, your transmission will blow up as a result of the fluid getting overheated in the cooler and burning inside the transmission, and this is bad. Of course, you could avoid this by putting in a manual transmission, and have more power and economy to boot! The overdrive switch in the automatics has a temperature sensor that does not allow the transmission to shift into overdrive until it is sufficiently warmed up to avoid possible damage

this seems to explain the delay in getting 4th in economy until things have warmed up, a trans specialist said mine was faulty and needed a new sensor

Normally aspirated vl has a lock up clutch which is controlled by a solenoid. Turbo vl does not have a lock up clutch because they give trouble with the extra power of the turbo.
