Don't know if this will help, have you had the harmonic balancer off?(pully in the front) or changed the CAS, I had this same problem - my VN was missing at high revs (about 3500rpm) my problem was that the CAS needed to be moved slightly because the car was missing and backfiring at higher revs, previousely I had to change the Harmonic balancer as it was damaged, this will make your car backfire also. If you start your car and night time in the dark and let it idle for a couple of minutes then check the manifold under the bonnet and see if it is glowing orange/red, this is one way of telling your harmonic balancer needs to be replaced
