VS S2 Exec Wagon 3.8L w/ Vy Auto Trans
Hi, I'm Nathan, Work for only the best Auto Parts group in the Country (will not name to keep you guys guessing).

My Car, 97 Series 2, 3.8L Wagon with mods such as LPG converison a month ago, VY Transmission installed when my VS carked it, and cold air intake.

I decided to purchase a Lukey Air Filter with life time guarantee, you kno the whole buy a K & N thing and clean it and re use it..... Well Lukey was new and only hat to be hand washed with water, dried and re used.

The Lpg appears to have had a bad affect on the styra-foam (material the filter is made of) and its become brittle and hardended.

Cold Air Intake smashed it also, too much pressure at 120ks/h, holes right thru it, and only after one clean and dry.

Right now my motor is running as rough as guts because I only looked at the rockers and lifter panel under the oil cap to change the oil and realised the sludge and dirt coming off my finger when i ran it under the rocker cover. Every Oil change before that the engine ran perfect and rockers were still showing carboned metal.

So I'm guessing after I go back to Ryco filters and changing my Oil 3 times every 500ks to clean it, I'll be looking at replacing my motor earlier than expected due to my trust in Lukey advertising in their filters.

Don't know what anyone else thinks about this, but I'm doubtful LPG will work with any filter brand. Cheers

so you're attributing rough running and sludgy/dirty oil to an air filter?

I think you will find that lukey filters are made from polyester fibres ... not styra-foam.

how can LPG affect the filter if it in injected after it? you must have it setup incorrectly. filter to close to the lpg injection maybe or regulator hoses?

Yeah I don't get it? Why is LPG going through the air filter in the first place?

Appreciate the write-up and all, but you've created more questions than you've answered. I'm sure K&N filters don't react that well to hydrocarbons either by the way..

Well K&N have a filter that holds together in the event of a backfire. If you are using a stock filter and air box, the air box will eventually explode. If you take your car to a good tuner they will minimise backfire in the intake. Here is the setup i have on one of my VS Statesmans.

Basicly, if you want to drive so hard that the car will backfire anyway, you should be on petrol not gas. Gas is more about economy than performance (unless multi point injection).

If you are having issues with your gas system then you should really see a specialist that have a dyno.

Hey guys,
Cheers for the write up about it all.... Spoke to everyone about it. The backfire did occur, its been running very rich since the LPG was installed. (Was told the mixer recycles the air and pumps the waste back into the cold air tube before the filter hence my confusion). I dont drive it hard and if i do yes it is on fuel, the colder plugs recommended for LPG dont help for the fast accel either.
About the filter holding up in the back fire... it was burnt polyester fibes that allowed the dirt and **** in. Not sure if the K & N will give much protection so I'll just go back to Ryco and check weekly.
Happy Driving
