next to where you plug in the IDE cable on the drive, there are 8 metal pins, and there should be a black thing over 2 of them. this is the jumper. the location of the jumper determines how the hard drive runs. whether it is master/slave/cable select. there should be a picture on the hard drive that explains that, or else in the HD manual. if not, let me know and ill try help further.

Hokay... as others have said, it sounds like a crash to me. If you can see a volume in windows then the slave/master jumpers will be fine.

Try http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm . You might be lucky and have some of the files you need still be in tact. Your Mum needs to save up $80 and go buy a new hdd. I would never trust that drive to hold anything important again.

Briliant.. I tried to install SP2, but my version of windows is a bit uhhh "dodgy"..

So it didn't accept the product key..

Is this the price I pay for using a dodgy version of Windows?
Well, if one was so inclined, one could go to Google and search for "xp sp2 serial keygen" and possibly find something which works.... seriall.com & all that...

Not that I've ever done anything like this... *cough*

You need a dodgy proggie to change your product key and fool Windows Product Activation. This changes the 2nd segment in the product key to something other than 640, the number used generically for Corporate volume licenses. Then you can install SP2. Plenty of these available, just be careful where you get one from or you may get a few nasty surprises.

Get legit XP Home Edition, I can't see you needing to join your home PC to a domain in a hurry so you don't need XP Professional. And if you purchase it along with your new 'non-Maxtor' hard drive, you can get it at an OEM price of $130.

As for the Maxtor/Seagate war, I support thousands of machines. I've seen a few Seagates die, but I've seen countless Maxtors die. They're rubbish.
