I've put on 3" J-Pipes on the end of my SSV sportwagon stock exhaust with dump tips. Sounds amazing except for one thing, the drone when cruising the highway at 110 in 6th and I hit a slight incline. It's worse when the family's in the car which has one slight advantage, it drowns out the Mrs. J-Pipes are known for virtually no drone which I wanted as the wagon is renowned for cabin drone so it caught me by surprise.

One theory from a club member I'm in is the pipes going from standard to larger tailpipes will cause the drone so before I go buying 2.5" tailpipes, just want to confirm this could be the cause.

wagon = drone
if you stray from the factory setup, that is a well known fact
and
the only fix that I have seen work is go back to standard
(or HSV rear mufflers for a bit more noise ... but NO drone)

No matter what size you go, anything on the rear apart from mufflers will drone.

I would be skeptical about the j pipes doing anything more than tricking people into buying them thinking the known drone problem is eliminated.

I had these 2.5" straight through pipes
http://i67.tinypic.com/9fslty.jpg

with the stock exhaust center and the drone was pretty bad at 100kmh and going up hills.
but with this center
http://i67.tinypic.com/9v8okl.jpg

it was almost silent at 100kmh but going up a hill was really bad
my wife complained so much about it to stop her drone I had to take the straight through pipes off and I put my 3" manta mufflers back on.
now the vehicle is not really loud but it has a nice note and has no drone.
the only way I can see to solve this problem is to get a set of bi-modal mufflers.

you will probably find even with 2.5" j pipes you will get drone going up a hill.
I don't know if it is just me but the sound of the vehicle with the straight through pipes is not right it almost reminds me of a 6cyl with all the mufflers removed the sound imo is crap its not a deep v8 sound.
maybe is just the 6.0 l98 but I don't like the note the straight through pipes make.
the mantas have a much nicer note as not_an_abba_fan said when I asked about what center and rear pipes I should use.

What about HSV bi-modals on OP's SSV wagon? Do you have that on yours?

extractors will help with the drone.
I have a wagon.

Put in straight through 2.5 inch tips with mufflers, standard headers, had a bit of drone.
Replaced standard headers with VF 340kw headers, drone all but gone.

Hmm, think I'll have a look for VE GTS E3 rear mufflers, if no luck in a few weeks I'll go manta or walkinshaw bimodal. Just got to work out how to wire them up if I get lucky.

Silly question, are the gts mufflers unique or same as clubbys and other hsv?

Mufflers will be similar..... Bi-modal mufflers are slightly smaller than standard mufflers but locate in the same position as GTS, Clubbie, Tourer.

The only differences will be in exhaust tip set up, to suit all the different rear bar combo's.
