From personal (stupidly expensive) experience - 100% go lifters. I have had an OEM gm lifter let go with disastrous consequences and now the same with a spring. Whilst the front is off you may as well do the chain and 100% get a new oil pump (pressure relief valve spring sticking is a known problem)

thanks for the help mate, this is the sort of stuff I wanted to know.

Both of these happened to me in the last 6 months in 2 different cars:

Stock OEM lifter letting go in a mild LS3. Took out the cam (obviously), lifter, 2 big ends and chipped a 10c coin size hole in the skirt of one of the pistons (+ scored the bore):

aaaaaaand last weeks effort on my minto 190,000km LS1. Yet to be 100% determined how well the valve and piston fared after that little ####up. Motor is 100% bog stock never thrashed. I was trundling along at 60 and then sitting at the lights for approx 1 min idling and this happened (2nd spring from the left):
