2012 VE thunder ute
Hi All

Just need some advice. My ute broke down just before Christmas power cut out as I was driving with the warning light advising to see dealership. I plugged my OBD in and it came up with error code for ECU 0100 or something. Got it towed to workshop and the couldn't find anything wrong with it. A month later I'm out drove fine then get in to drive home it dosent start plug in OBD and no error code as such but states miscommunication with ECU once tow truck arrived it started again but decided to have it checked. My ute has now been with the dealership 4 weeks replaced the ECU but had trouble with reprogramming and the price keeps going up... has anyone had similar issues and want to know if it's something that may be ongoing or can be fixed.

I have seen the ecus fail due to temp, normally tip some cold water on the metal side and it will start again. Requires replacement ecu. Is the ecu they have fitted new or 2nd hand? Did they specify what issues they had when programming it?

Get in touch with an actual diagnostic technician. They specialise in diagnostics. It’s becoming a skill in its own right. Some places have mobile guys that come out to workshops just to do the fault finding. Guns for hire. Then the workshop does the repair. One finds it. The other fixes it.

People will often guess and jump to “it’s the ecm” without testing other factors. The new ecm may sometimes seem like the correct solution but when the new one fails due to underlying issues, the owner starts watching dollars fly and workshops loading ecm canons. Very few test the integrity of related circuits to see what might cause overheating, shorts or burn out drivers.

If you have a diagnosis that an ecm has failed, you sure as **** want the supporting evidence for what in the ecm has failed. If they don’t know and are guessing, go elsewhere.

Find a diagnostic expert. Contact them. See if there’s one near you.
