hey guess just a quick 1 on engine temp. my vr temp is great when driving (sits on 1/4) but soon as i stop it just shoots up so quick to just over half then the fan kicks in. the thing im worried about is the rapid increase in temperature! soon as i slow down or in traffic the fan comes on every 2 mins and this is in melbourne in winter!!! i could't imagine it in summer!!! the fan will be running all the time. also it never used to shoot up as fast. is this rapid increase in temp normal?
yeah sounds like your radiator is having a bit of trouble. reverse flush it. dont just change the coolant. no point. coolant doesnt improve the specific heat capacity of water heaps (by that i mean the ability for water to transfer and dissapate heat). i have run just water in my rad. no probs. never hit over 1/2 temp. (i give my car the boot heaps). so your going to need to have really dirty coolant to stuff it up that bad. yeah sure because the rad needs air its not going to be able to cool itself effectively so a thermo fan might need to kick in. i am not too worried about the fan going on every 2 mins but shooting up that quick is strange.
reverse flush it and test thermostat.

hey garfa thanks for the reply! the radiator is only 12 months old and i changed the thermostat 2 months ago. and yesterday i changed the radiator cap. its just weird that it was fine for the first two weeks after installing the new thermostat then it just got worse. its frustrating :b: if i was to reverse flush it how would i go about it? of what else do you have in mind.

cheers

pull out the thermostat and checlk it. maybe get a cooler one aswell. and install a switch to manuall turn on the rad fan.
reverse flushing needs a special tool and a compressor. cheaper to get a workshop to do it. pain really but works very well.
any Q's just ask.

thanks garfa for your help, il give it a go! the thermostat i put in was an aftermarket one. do they open at the same temp as say a holden 1? or do they vary when you buy different brands? do you have a good brand or type in mind? as for the fan, thats a really good idea about the mannual switch, did you do that yourself? lastly, when the weather warms up a bit say in a month i might get the radiator done, whats it cost for a reverse flush?

That's the location for a VR. Not sure if it is the VS thermostat is in the same location , but i'm sure that u would have to take of the engine cover first.

if you have a compressor do it yourself but if not its too costly to buy a reverse flush tool and compressor.
nah i have just heard about the rad fan/switch idea. easy way to cool the car when not moving much.
depends on the thermostat really. i dunno what sort of thermostat you bought so i cant tell you what temp its rated at. just buy a cooler one. ask some one in the know probably a rad specialist or the like. then buy it from their work shop. workshops sell parts usually cheapr than most places. ask that guy also about the reverse fluch. i doubt you would see much change of a $100.
