just received a letter from the EPA about exhaust noise and needing a test.
just wondering if anyone else has done a test and what the results were.
- I've got extractors to hi-flow cats to single 2.5 system with rear muffler.
cheers.

$2500 fine per high flow cat they find... Easier to find a stock system and bolt it on for the test then put yours back on

What are you on? There's plenty of legal high flow cats.

Just get a standard exhaust and chuck it on, saves the hassle in the end....

Its a noise test, nothing to do with the components used....

Still easier to get a standard system tho, rather than making a loud system quiet

The requirement for such testing is usually as a result of having driven past a noise metering device (they are randomly installed throughout cities and towns - they are also often referred to as 'members of the public'). Regardless of the methods used to report you and your vehicle if it does not pass then you can expect a defect and likely fine. They will also be testing exhaust emissions and if you have altered any of the pollution control devices then 'double trouble'. Your vehicle (and anyone elses) must be maintained in accordance with expectations - that means roadworthy in all aspects. Sorry but that's what society expects and demands.

Unless they've changed, the fines are indeed horrendous. If a workshop is found to have done a mod such as hollowing a cat, their fine can exceed $45,000!
A personal fine can be up to $10,000 from memory.
Along with the need of a muffling device in ALL the standard spots, and of course that magic 90ish dB limit.
