I think this pretty well sums it up.

I would still argue that a sports exhaust is not a modification, because it still follows the original line and uses all the original hangers. It is a replacement aftermarket exhaust.

I'd agree with that but would add that it would have to have the same number and type of mufflers and resonators as original.

Yep, so it is. 500mm +/- 25mm.

And a CAI won't affect insurance as it was as standard fitment to some models.

I know this is an old post but im just browsing through looking for information on exhausts and I thought I would add to this.

My understandings of Mods VS Insurance companies is this, if it does not have anything to do with the accident/theft and you have informed them about it they have to cover you. An exhaust will not cause you to merge into another car by accident, it will also not be the one who picks up your car and steals it in the night.

Think of show cars, they get insurance and most of their modifications would be illegal

I get my insurance through a broker AON who uses Lumley General as underwriter.

Their stance is any 'engine' modification (including extractors) makes your car uninsurable (in their eyes).

They have however insured the following modifications at agreed value:
- Lowering 2 inches and 18 inch rims (providing they have locknuts)
- Cat back sports exhaust
- CAI Pod setup
- Sound system

Shannons and Vigil insure many of that sort of car. Many of them however are not insured at all. I think you will find that most are virtually never driven on the street and the insurance doesn't extend to competition use.

If the modification did not contribute to the accident then in *most* cases the insurance company will ignore it. I think you will find that they don't "have" to cover you though because the vehicle you are driving is not what they believed they were insuring. The onus is squarely on the insured (you) to provide all information that may be relevant to the insurers decision to offer you coverage.
