Is there any valid reason why some drivers use 95 or 98 octane? My handbook states "use 91 octane" - no need to use anything higher or am I missing something here?

It all depends on your car, now my car is a bit older I find the 95 helps the economy, not too mention E10 is no good in it. Try them all really, if there is no difference in your car between 91 and 98- lucky you :D But some cars a designed to run specifically on premium fuels. Just experiment a bit, simply put all the higher octane level means is the burning of the fuel is more controlled, this may or may not make a significant difference in your car.

i think cars that run better on E10 run under different conditions...

i think e10 does not like hot ..stop start..city driving...

i dont have a issue with idel with e10 in fact the newer engine i have for vx i think....loves and runs quiet at idle
and the vt engine was a little less stable...and little louder....
now i used the air mass from vt on both..untouched from factory.

i think personally also it has a llot to do with the car new state in the beginning ..of its life..at 1000km and 5000km and 10000km
if that person used E10 as a owner i bet the car was correctively tuned for E10
if the person had unleaded it was correctly tuned for that...

the vt --vx engines are all ment to run on E10....with idle amd power curve....
but also set to run on higher...
i think if you tune for low you dont get the same results of hi...
and if you tune high you dont all low

and lets factor in the variables...........air intake ....plugs.........plug leads.........coils.........timing.........
when we say timing be mean base timing and base idle...etc..
i am sure if we checked all holdens we find there is some brands of fuel in e10 or unleaded we can and can not use
\]without issue ot the need for corrective tune..

but i have a stock standard holden vt body with a vx engine..that is standard....the oily bits are well cared for...and the driver knows what he is doing...
and to date no one on the vt has posted a better running milage than i yet!
so i am doing something right...
i do have my zoom moments but leep that in check

unload unleaded and prem should beat E10 always

:)

Well the Koenigggggggggggggggggsssssssssssegggggggggggg CCX runs on 91 specifically, and crappy eco fuel if memory serves. So it isn't "worse" fuel, just depends on how you car engine is designed, that said wouldn't mind seeing how they run on aviation fuel :p

just did a trip from tville to mackay and back over easter...after a week of flogging prior to easter weekend i got 16L/100 (city). after 300km of highway i was at 11L/100. after another 450km highway i was at 10L/100 and after another 250km i got to a lowest of 8.2L/100. im guessing it was getting lower and lower as the ECU changed from cop a flogging mode to cruise mode. lol
