fuel pump

i went today to get my o2 sensors because my car is burning alot of fuel. only getting bout 320 on a full tank till my light comes on on a standars v6. he told me that it could be my fuel pump. does that play a major roll in fuel consumption. if that is wrecked how can u tell or cant you? also what does it actualy control? can it make all the figures out?
