I had the same issue with my vz wagon and turns out all I had to do was tighten the fuel cap a little more than the standard clicks. When the cap clicks to let you know it's tight grab it around the edges and give it a squeeze and tighten it up more till it won't go anymore. That solved all my fuel smell issues.

hi there i have the same prob in my ute(vs v8) but only when i run 98 octane, running 95 i get no smell. Have checked all fuel lines, breather in the fuel tank , but have had no luck
