That means we're f@#ked as far as manufacturing goes:(
Too true.

Prior to WW1, Aus imported manufactured stuff from the Olde Mother Country. Supply chains and British (in)capability changed that idea, so when WW2 happened, we were able to ramp up essential war supplies relatively quickly.
Now, with globalisation and reliance on a country that is seen as an important economic partner, and a potential enemy, had put us back 110 years.
Along with ridiculous Fed Govt decisions over the past 40+ years.

An example. where I last worked, we assembled items made from imported and Aus made components.
Some of these items had to have component traceability and manufacturing certificates. Others did not.
One insignificant item was manufactured in China, exported to USA, imported to Aus with all the required paperwork at a cost of about 10c each.
The same item used for non-traceable use, was manufactured in China, imported to Aus, put in a box marked 'a proudly Australian company' and cost 1c each.
The owner of the company is now considering shutting up shop, as he can't get any items that are available within Australia, all have to be imported at a huge price increase, (because they can ), with long order times and delays, the cost of running his business and complying with Fed and State Govt requirements has skyrocketed, and customers expect to pay the same price for the same items that they bought 5 years ago.

Global shipping costs are a big part of inflation. Why are costs increasing? Shipping insurance. Why is tht increasing? Global conflicts and extreme weather.

If only we made these flat plastic thingys, it would be ok.

I bet they do at $35 for a pack of two.
This is the assumption lots of people make. However, pretty much everything I have bought from eBay I could have bought for the same price or less from the stealer.

Off topic, but I have bought some parts from Holden for a lot less than the wreckers ask for a SH part.

I did price up bonnet clips once and they were $5 each at Holden. I paid about $1 each elsewhere.
