thanks for that very good info. one reason we bought an early model toyota yaris was that it has a timing chain, but I guess they wear out too.

Finally got back to this after months. I found that a grunty rattle gun & 27mm socket undid the bolt without having
to chock the flywheel.:) Was going to try a 3 claw puller to remove the harmonic balance but its lugs are too thick to get
on to the full dia of the hbalance. So maybe remove some bolts on the smaller pulley and see if I can get a puller in there.

For completeness an update.
I found the rattlegun loosened the harmonic balance bolt easily, so inspired me to continue.
I was able to borrow a claw foot puller to remove the harmonic balance.
Radum have them for around $9 and super dear around $33.

I was surprised how loose the belt was on the idler side, barely any contact with the belt at all.
Fairly obvious belt replacement, but did find a terrific utube on the subject that helped a lot

So water pump and belt replaced, checked welsh plugs ok etc.
Thanks for the forum help:)
