Hi all,

Just had my tailshaft reconditioned and added new flange to link up to new vl turbo diff (was running 10 bolt before)

How much end play is too much? Pretty sure he cut too much off?

* 308, T5, 2 piece, vl turbo diff

Thanks in advance

Are those the pics of the new driveshaft fitted? If so then it looks about right. The slip joke doesn't slide all the way in, that way when the suspension compresses the driveshaft can move forward and not bind up inside the back of the gearbox

Yes thats it test bolted on - rear flange is flush with the diff.

Oh really? Ok that makes sense, but it seems to be sotting about 20mm out from previous set up

I would think 25 would be the perfect amount of clearance but you are showing 35.
Is the diff to tailshaft straight in line or is the diff angled down
If angled down then the diff will rise under power and push into the box a little, but of course if in line then as it raises under power, then the yoke into the box will have a tendency to move out from the box a little.
For memory those yokes are

Ask the tailshaft guy in writing showing pics
Of course the important question is did you give him the exact measurements from diff flange to back of box ?

I just measured a commodore yoke at 115 long with obvious signs of 25 out of the box so 90 inside the box
Your's I would assume would be 80 inside the box which should be ok.
I can do a closer pic of the yoke if you need it

If the stands are under the axle housing ? ok, but if the stands are under the body then it will be different when the wheels go on the ground.

Ha Ha good looking toes for an old fart huh

Why would they cut the front portion, if you are changing the rear flange?

I'll jump under my VC today and measure the distance between the back of the gearbox and the base of the tailshaft yoke and post it up.. The area you have measured...

Recently, I had my tailshaft recoed....Running a Toyota 5 speed, there were signs that the yoke was rubbing on the gearbox extension, because the front half of the tailshaft was too long....They said this was part of the cause of me having to replace 3 C.V joints in 4 years....

The front section of tailshaft would have stayed the same from the gearbox to the fixed centre bearing, only the rear was cut for the VL borg warner flange changed from the uni to the 10bolt salsbury.
Your picks look fine as most front gearbox yoke splines are about 100mm and you need around 60mms engaged on the box rear shaft, which leaves about 40 exposed as immortality has said before to allow for suspension movement.

Also tailshaft is measured with car off the stands on level ground, doing it on the stands will be wrong measurement with diff/suspension hanging unladen down. This is important for the rear measurement from the centre bolt of centre bearing to face of diff flange.
The front measurement from end of gearbox seal face to centre of bolt of centre bearing doesn't really matter/change as that is a fixed length on the body screw holes.

So if you didn't change your gearbox, then the front of tailshaft is okay and if rear bolts up along with centre bearing holes then your good to go.

Yes .. if you have a BW diff installed
No ... if you still have the original VC 6cyl 8Bolt Salsbury as the measurements would be different between flange and uni's
