I was looking at XR6T's before I brought my SS.
The main reason why I went the SS was simply I could not find a decent manual one within my price range (which at the time was also 15k). That was 3 years ago or so now so prices will be within that range, easily.
The second reason is im familar with Holdens. I was more comfortable looking at Commodores and identifying issues than I was going and looking at a Falcon and spotting things that were issues.
In the end its up to you, go with what you like. I preferred the shape of the Commodore over the Falcon and finding a manual was easy.
Performance wise, the LS1 loves mods, so does the XR6T. A lot of the XR6T's are making big power by simply upping the boost and getting a tune and intercooler.
