The previous owner of my car 'fixed' this problem by drilling a small hole under where the spare sits.

Great how to, just removed my tire and relised i need to do this :(. Took the car to the carwash and its definatly coming from the rear quater window, could see a flow of water from all the way up under the parcel shelf.

Unlike you Mr Squishi i didnt have to drill a hole in mine to let the water out, seems rust took care of that :(:(

thx for the writeup, will do this when i get some spare time :)

This was fixed in several cases by replacing the tail-lights with aftermarket ones. Obviously a failed seal there - this is quite common as these cars are getting quite old and weathered now.

Do you mean as in the Altezza brand after market lights? How many other brands for VN/VP lights are there?

Nah, any replacement tail light that isn't GM could be considered aftermarket. Even cheap asian copies of originals. My clear front grille is an aftermarket cheapie. Much more prone to stone chips than the factory numbers :)
