Decided to finally fix the front window regulator on the missus's VT ..what a pita. Since i googled and came here for advice .. will share the results. been a useful forum this over the years.
It was slipping teeth but both gears are intact and you needed to be arnie to move it.
plenty of 'how to change it' advice around, boring, I am fixing the bloody thing.
It was designed to not be dismantleable, the main gear and arms are pressed together and cover the tags that need to be bent open to remove the actual regulator section.
hah, I got a shed .. removed, sliced the stop in half with a cutoff saw and flattened it down some, allowed me to wind the gear totally out of the way, cold chiselled the tags off, pulled the reg apart and threw away the planned obsolescence failure point, a little nylon bush on the back of the regulator and wd40'ed the rust out, probably why it was so stiff under load. grabbed a 4mm nut and drilled it out to 4.5mm, welded it in where the plastic bush was, packed the regulator with lanolin grease and welded it back together with a couple of tacks where the folded over pins were with the MIG.
refitted, works a treat, smooth as silk.
thanks commodore forum peeps for all the quiet help over the years..
