i will get them to have a look at it when i get my o2 sensor and crank angle sensor put in and get my tranny looked at

Sounds very much like the thermostat is wide open (need a new one). The car would be 'running better' Because engine management will be giving it more fuel to try and warm up. The result is a bit more power, but crap economy.
As for the smell, the air ducts behind the dash give of funny smells everytime the temperature of the air running through them changes enough. (like when you turn off the AC but leave the fan going.
