This is definatley not a how to, its a how we did it, i gaurantee someone will say its dodge lol. End State Mission successfull, if yhou dont have a clue, read this, you will have some!
Do not attempt if you are not familiar with safe working procedures and knowledge of the basic steps such as removing the wheel and caliper
The Tools
- Axle Stands
- Jack
- Oil Pump (Ask at Supercrap)
- 10 - 19mm ring spanners + Socket Set
- Rubber mallet
- LSD Center
Part One - Removing the Axles
1) Loosen Wheel Nuts + Remove Wheels
- Ensure you jack high enough as to allow the diff enough room to sag down, support vehicle using axle stands + wheel chock
2) Remove calipers and Zip Tie out of the road
3) Remove Brake rotor and keep handy
4) Note on the axle 4 Holes, one big 3 smaller. Using the Larger of the 4 holes and Rotating to access all bolt, Undo the 4 Retaining bolts holding the axle in (Photo A)
5) Grab your brake rotor and place it on The Hub Back to front, attach all 5 wheel nuts only just on. Using the Rotor as a slide hammer remove the axle.
Part Two - Draining/Opening Diff
1) Drain Diff using the lowest bolt holding the diff cover on.
2) Once the Oil has drained remove the rest of the bolts.
3) Using a flathead screwdriver remove the Diff Cover.
Part Three - Removing Diff Center
1) Locate the Bolts holding the crown Gear on
2) Loosen the Crown Gear Retaining Bolts Using what ever means possible (Breaker Bar). apply the vehicle into Nuetrel to allow the diff to turn to access the other bolts (8 in total) Expect them to be tight. Loosening them will make sense later on
3) Remove the 4 Bolts, 2 either side of hemisphere
4) Apply the Park Brake/vehicle into Park
5) Remove the centre From the diff, for this we used the flat blade of a tyre iron and the rubber mallet. There are other methods, you tube them.
Part Four - Swapping Crown Gear
1) Remove pre loosened bolts, if you didnt loosen them good luck, we did this and had to replace the diff centre so we could loosen them lol
2) Using a Rubber Mallet remove the Crown gear. it will be stiff but be pursausive
3) Place the crown gear on the new LSD diff Centre in this case. and gently tap it back into place.
4) reapply to bolts to the crown gear
- in a star pattern. Similiar to the way you do you wheel nuts. This will draw the crown gear back into its finish location flush against the diff center.
Part Five - Replacing Diff Center
1) Replace the diff Center so it sits correctly
2) Replace both shims either side (we only had two)
- We used a rubber mallet and a flat edge to seat them both correctly
4) Tighten The Crown Gear Bolts using the same method as per loosening them
5) Replace the Diff Cover using gasket goo to seal correctly
Part Six - Replacing Axles
1) Pull the handbrake bits off the 4 Retaining bolts and locate the axles/hub & handbrake bit on in the correct manner. you may have to rotate the axles to lacte correctly.
2) Tighten the bolts in the same manner as per removal
Part Seven - Replacing Wheels/Brakes
By now if you dont know how to do this, your stuffed and your beyond my help. Dont lose the bolts retaining the caliper, they suck to replace. We did a dodge job when we lost one, but the gain was an instantaneous 8 HP due to the shiney bolts.
Part Eight - Filling with oil
1) Ensure you have the correct oil, get your pump and pump away, it took us about two tubes full to fill it up.
Part Nine - Drive Away
Be gentle! Let the oil get about the diff for about 200m, then lose it at your first intersection. Get embarresed and floor it whilst yhour new LSD Drag your ass end all over the shop!
