for anyone out there that is looking to buy a damaged car, either like this one or from an Auction House (this one is a listed write off as well), you should do your home work first.
look up VIV's (Vehicle Identification Validation) on Vicroads - it tells you everything you need to do to get a car back on the road.
Fortunately, this is set up to catch dodgey repairs (and rebirths) like this one.
ALL damage info is kept on a database and is used to compare the finished product at the inspection.
the dodgey roof will most likely be found anyway.

Holden produce a body repair manual for replacing ALL boby parts for all the cars they make.

This involves drilling out the spot welds and making overlaps in the correct places.

The VY ^^^ dosent look like it has been done by the book.

Side note - My dad put a new roof onto my sisters Datsun 180B as it had rusted away along the gutters. We have photos of it in the drive with no roof on. Had to support the car with bricks as it went like jelly once the roof was cut off.

The new roof was oxy welded into place and the car went for 10 more years.

Rust in the floor finally did it in.

Yeah you can remove and replace the roof - same as most body panels, rails and sub structure. As 88Green said, there are documented procedures on how to carry out such repairs so they are as strong as and as safe as the original car. That is not an example of how to do it though.

Written-off vehicle registration : VicRoads

These 2 points should bring him undone anyway:

a completed accident damage repair report for crash damaged vehicles. This is a written report/repair diary and photographs detailing how the vehicle was repaired.
photos taken prior to and during repairs.

You can replace the roof. It happens quiet often.
Wether this gentleman has done it properly is another story, though its not as if he's hidden the fact.

It would be usefull as a race car for that money.
