So I was replacing the water pump today (95 VS commodore, 3.8 v6) no biggie, going fine, then I had a small problem, I broke a bolt, again no biggie, I unbolted and remove the new water pump, drilled and then removed the broken bolt. sweet back to re installing the pump... before I went to get a replacement bolt and started to re install the pump I decided to clean out the threads of all the other small bolt holes, so I went round 3 and it all went well... then i had one more to go, I was doing the bottom bolt hole when it cracked, I herd a loud cracking nose and at the same time i saw a split spread up the block to just under the hole were the impeller sits and then split across in a T shape... AHHHHHHH FREAKOUT

what I need to know is what to do...

is it fatal?
do I need a new block/engine?
can I use something like stop leak? (its worked on head gaskets before)
can it be welded up and fixed that way?

any ideas or help would be massively appreciated

there's also some gouging to the block from the last water pump that I would like to get fixed too

here are some pics

before u ask, I was using a torque wrench set to the correct settings for each bolt the whole time and also following the Gregory's workshop manual as well

Isn't that just the timing belt cover? Pick to remove but I don't believe its the block.

As phect said. Timing cover renewal should fix the problem.

I hope that's all it is! I was stressing something serious, I certainly don't have the money to replace the whole block

can you confirm that It is just the timing belt cover and that it is replaceable?

how much of a job is it to replace by the way?

here are more pics for you to confirm

thank you both so much, I've at least calmed down now hahaha

Yep, timing cover. Prick of a job, but cheaper than a new engine.

Looks like your water pump bearing had a bit of a wobble or something going by the gouging.

big load off my mind that its not the block!

am I better off to DIY it or should I take it to a dealership/mechanic?

just checked the manual, this will defiantly be a dealership/mechanic job...

Shouldn't be too hard to find. A good second hand one will do the job. Just check it for corrosion around the water jackets. No idea on cost, I haven't done one for a long time.

As for DIY, depends how handy you are. It's not a hard job, just a pain in the arse. And have to watch nothing goes in the front of the sump as it's open there with the timing cover off.
