i know that normally these things are just resistors that plug in and change what temp the car thinks the engine is but this seems differnt. has anyone tried one and do they work? or is this just more crap?

Without a picture of the actual product it would be hard to judge exactly what it does. As it is for EFI engines only I would say it is similar to the cheap resistors by tricking the ECU into pumping in more fuel. 15 different settings is just a resistance dial, adjusting the resistance therefore changing the degree of 'trickiness' it gives the ECU.

id rather stick a screw driver in the fuse box... probbly do the same thing..

you want power your gonna have to pay more than $40 for it...

go buy a
$50 - Eprom burner (search for willem on ebay US)
$6 - AT29C256 (www.futurlec.com, 28pin )
$free - memcal down your pants from your local self server wreckers
$0.40 -socket to install into the memcal for easy chip access
total cost $56.40

now go get the SV3800 binary file, burn it install it into your freshly made memcal and they'res the cheapest power modification you can make, and if your feeling lucky bump the spark up a bit for a bit more power... becareful to make sure it dosnt ping....

real tuning is done where you can ajust the maps... not by some bull**** resister
