I questioned about the idler pulley and tension pulley for the drive belt, we used to replace the original plastic ones on the 3.8 with the aftermarket metal units with the replaceable 6203 bearing inside.
Exactly what I did some time ago.

Do the PCV mod. It’s in the “how to” section.

Do frequent oil changes. Every 5000-7500.

Buy a bulk pack of the oil filters.

Carry a spare coolant cap. Preferably a Holden cap. Carry a coolant bleed bucket to get the air out without risking overheating.

Have a couple of HVAC actuators.

If anything buggers up on a VE, it’s going to be electrical.

cheers, will just replace idlers and keep the old ones as spares then. don't take up any room and they are cheap from memory, used to be a bout 40$ each for the new ones (long time ago however)
Dayco always used to be very good for the water pumps, is that still the case?
