CRAMP - STILL OWNING SYMMONS PLAINS!

ROUND 6 at Symmons Plains culminated with CVW Manta Racing’s Steve Cramp on the podium again!

The team arrived in Tasmania holding the lap record for the category - set in their round win sweep at the track last year. With this in mind, practice was used to concentrate on varying set-ups for the car, rather than opting for fast times.

Qualifying was also a strategic session, with the decision made to save the tyres. With several other competitors losing brakes throughout the session, and Cramp’s familiarity with the track, Team Manager Rod Duff and Steve made the decision for one initial fast lap and a follow-up quick at the end of the session.

This gave Cramp the fastest time before a brand new main auxillary drive belt gave way and a 5th position for the start of racing was the result.

Race One was a demonstration of Cramp’s ability to work through the field with a finish in 2nd.

Starting on the front of the grid for Race Two, the rain set in and the category EVOs used their all-wheel advantage to take an early lead leaving Cramp in 4th.

Making his way up to 2nd again, the CVW Manta Racing HSV’s wheels hit the ripple strip, spinning the car and losing ground. Recovering well, Steve finished in 4th position.

“We actually went faster in the wet,” Cramp enthused. “The car feels great. Race Three will be good!”

By lap three, Cramp had moved into 2nd and began chasing the EVO of Graham Alexander. With two attempts to get past, an impressive display of late braking in the continuing rain achieved a race lead and a win!

It was an eventful weekend for most teams with CVW Manta Racing perhaps the only team to not encounter major problems. They also held onto the prized lap record and Cramp was on the podium again, missing out on the outright round win by a mere 2 points.

Spirits and expectations are high for a successful finish to the year in Round 7 at Eastern Creek this weekend.

A big thanks to our sponsors for the round:

Well done guys, a brilliant effort to say the least.

Geez Tassie last week and Eastern Creek this week, it doesn't give you much time to get anything done does it!

Any idea when the race is going to be shown? I tend to miss it all the time but if I know what time roughly I'll stick it in the diary to watch :)

GTP TO RACE EXCLUSIVELY AT V8 SUPERCAR EVENTS IN 2007

PRODUCTION-based touring car racing between a variety of makes and models will become a regular feature at V8 Supercar meetings when the Australian Performance Car Championship (GTP) joins the country’s premier motorsport program next year.

GTP, featuring popular cars such as the Holden HSV GTS, Ford Falcon GT and F6 Typhoon, BMW M3, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza WRX STi, will run a seven-round championship exclusively at V8 Supercar Championship Series and Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series events, Category Manager Craig Nayda announced today.

The GTP championship will open with a 200 kilometre mini-endurance race in late March at Wakefield Park in New South Wales and finish in mid-November at Symmons Plains, Tasmania. Subject to confirmation, the calendar includes the Sandown 500 and Gold Coast Indy meetings.

“This is a very exciting development for motor racing fans and GTP teams, as it will put our show in front of the biggest audience in Australian racing,” Mr Nayda said.

“GTP is renowned for extremely close and intense racing between a wide variety of different makes and models of popular performance cars that can be seen every day on public roads.

“As such, the championship’s relevance for fans and vehicle manufacturers is unquestionable.

“I expect GTP’s presence on the V8 Supercar program next year will be an incentive for new brands, teams and manufacturers to join the championship.”

More details about the 2007 Australian Performance Car Championship (GTP), including the television package, race formats, new technical regulations and a revised points system, will be announced soon.

Eligibility of cars for GTP is determined by the series organiser, which permits only specified, limited modifications for safety and reliability. Internal modifications to engines and transmissions are not allowed, but cars may use different springs, shock absorbers, brake materials and slick tyres.

The series has been running since 1996 and has provided experience for many of today’s best young V8 Supercar drivers, including Cameron McConville, Dean Canto, Grant Denyer, Luke Youlden, Warren Luff and Chris Alajajian.
