If you're talking about the little silver thing on the key head, then it contacts the key reader on the ignition barrel and disarms the immobilisor. It also completes the circuit to charge the battery in the key head.

huh, I realised it completed the circuit to disable the immobiliser but did not know it charged the key! You learn something every day.

Might have to put my spare key into service once a month or so to keep the battery live.

Are you sure it charges the fob battery?
These batteries are only a standard, every day, run-of-the-mill CR2032 or CR2035 (CR2032 I think) lithium battery with solder tabs.
These types of lithium batteries are expendable and can't be charged.

The VT service CD says it is charged up by the ignition. I'll find it.

this would not surprise me either - I'm pretty sure that they are charged in a PC or laptop (not all of them but some)
