It's all coming back to me now...
Loooooong ago I had a series 1 VN V6.
Back then they were just VN V6 because there were no subsequent models lol.
Mine was worked and fairly hot, and I remember the exact same noise.
I diagnosed it without much trouble, as the noise was directly in front of me.
The flex plate, because of inherent V6 vibration etc. causes fretting (material erosion) and cracking around the plate where it bolts to the crankshaft.
This is also attributable to the measly PCD on the bolt diameter.
I actually worked this out before Holden made a change in the next series to include a 'doubling plate', a large washer between the flex plate and the bolts.
Take that you Holden smarty pants's ha ha.
I advise not to use the vehicle before assessing the situation any further
