Really hard to hear, I can hear belt noise and see more smoke than I'd be happy with too.
Trick question(s), when was it last serviced, oil type/grade used?

No mods I will service tomorrow as I just got it yesterday. It sounds like a tractor. I thought there was a bit too much smoke.

That smoke and sound would have me heading direct to look for a cracked header or exhaust joint on the drivers side

Sounds like cracked header. Fairly common on these.

If your intending to replace with another cast iron exhaust manifold than I would think a standard ecotec unit would be identical for the drivers side, passenger side as mentioned would have the EGR port.
If you have a cracked exhaust manifold you may as well splurge for some decent headers like pacemakers or something similar. Contact the user Not_An_Abba_Fan on this site, he does good deals on exhaust systems.

I will replace with a cast one for now. I thought the EGR was on passenger side?
