Yay for over protectionism.

Why the **** does Australia not have an R18+ rating for video games?

Seems bloody stupid.

We dont have one because the SA Attorney General, Michael Attkinson is still voting against it. EVERY other state has voted yes, but it has to be unanimous . He thinks its protecting young people, despite the average age of the Australian gamer being 30 years old. Whats funny is half the games that get refused classification get imported from Canada or England.

I remember this time last year Fallout 3 was refused classification because it had drug addiction in the game and it mentioned a real drug. All they did was change the name of the drug and it was allowed to be sold here. How does that change the impact of the game on anyone? Bit of a joke.

Dont worry, ebay is your friend if you want this game.

Here is the reason why the game was banned:

Seriously, from watching a few Youtube videos featuring the game, it doesn't look any different in 'gore factor' compared to any other zombie genre or GTA style shooter.

In my opinion, a ban increases the popularity of the game. Remember when GTA San Andreas had the "hot coffee" incident, which caused a complete removal of the existing stock from the shelves and replacement with an ammended version. The news only made the game more sort after and got the publicity in the papers for the ban.

Game classification generally is a waste of time. If a kid wants a game, they will do anything to obtain it. I would be suprised how many parents out there give a damn about what their kids are playing, or have the time to physically sit with them all day watching the game to determine if there is any content which may affect them. Yes a classification is a gauge to determine general content, but has anyone read the specifics of the classification. It usually tells you squat.

Placing an R classification on a game only means more trouble for the stores that sell the product, meaning that staff have to check ID's and keep the games seperate from the rest. Frankly, a store wants your money and how many times has a store asked you for your ID, or questioned you who will be playing the game after you purchase it?

Same argument applies for movies. How many times has a 15 year old kid been asked for ID when going to see a M or MA rated movie? Atleast if there is an R18+ a parent can say NO you are not playing that to their 15 year old kid, however what is going to happen with this game is they are going to change something so minor it has no bearing on the actual game play and it will sneak past the OFLC and the 15 year old boy will be playing a R rated game in a MA disguise.

Ill use Fallout 3 again as an example. They had drug addiction in the game, the OFLC banned the game on the principle that they used the name of a real drug. All they did was change the name of the drug and it passed. However you can still shoot up and watch heads fly off mutants in slow motion.
