Hey guys,

Just wondering what the process is with lowering a VY (or any model for that matter) that has IRS? I am looking to lower my VY S2 in the next few months and just wondering what I should be looking for (brands, methods etc.), shops you guys have had experience with, how good they were, and price estimates to get the lot done.

From other threads it seems you need:

- Springs
- Shortened Shocks
- Another Wheel Alignment
- Labour
- Possible Camber Kit (dunno if pre-fitted VY S2 is any good)

Damn this looks to be a fairly expensive exercise :(

Not sure on what my drop should be, but my estimates look to be about 1 1/2 - 2 inches with standard Kings or Superlows - I don't want to go too low as I want to keep ride comfort, but I've also been told it can affect the IRS and sit too low in the rear when in gear if say some Super Superlows were thrown in?

If anyone can give me some insight would be appreciated.

Cheers.

If you're only going to lower it an inch and a half, you won't need to get shortened shocks. King springs would be the cheaper option at about $200 - $300 for a set. I reckon $500 approx fitted.

True, shortened shocks aren't needed.

Neither is a camber kit in your case, I believe. Just get them to adjust the camber using the factory adjustment after they've put the springs in. This will stop your back tyres wearing unevenly (on the inside).

IMO you should go to a reputable suspension place like Pedders, where they know their stuff...

Ahh thanks guys, good to know shortened shocks aren't always needed.

So basically the IRS won't cause any problems or get in the way, and I should be just on the lookout for a pair of Kings, Lows or Lovells within my drop limits? As I said I'm not looking for a dumped car, just something with a bit better handling (and look of course).

Cheers.

From several other threads on this forum, Kings have a harsher ride than Lovells or Pedders.

you can lower the car an inch to and inch and a half, but you will get negative camber and the commodores on the rear do not have camber adjustments only toe adjustments, which means that you will have uneven tear wear.

My mechanic and i have spoken to so many different suspension specialist. and all of the endorsed kits for VT/VX arent compatible with vy/vz because of the additional toe adjustments. I was told by someone from a tyre shop at caboolture said that if you were to change the lower control arm from the standard one to either FE2 or the utes arms then it would fix the camber, But no one has confirmed or denied that it would work on the commodore forums that i have posted the enquiry on

i hope this helps

You cant install one, that wont be strong enough or that wont do damage

Just to clarify this; VY's already have negative camber on the rear wheels from factory, its just that lowering them makes the camber greater.

This could well be true. My VY SS has obviously got FE2, and I've had it lowered and had no need to install a camber kit and no problems with excessively uneven tyre wear.

All these opinions are great but opposite sides of the story kinda mess my decisions up lol.

At the end of the day people wouldn't be lowering cars within reasonable limits if it was causing problems, and thats what I keep coming back to. :p
