You can do the timing chain with out taking the engine out can't you? as you have to remove the chain to get the cam gear off and cam out.

You take the cam sprocket off the motor, the chain stays on the motor...
To change the chain you need to remove oil pump which means you need to drop the sump a bit.

as for cam size Munz has covered it pretty well, i usually go with 222/228 113LSA for a ls1 with no hi stall, it will push a bit but a good tune will get rid of that tendancy

yeah as they guys said, 224/228 at most. It all comes down to tune too. Guys in the usa are running 223/231 .610/.617 114 in GTO Ls1's with stock stall with a little push , nothing too annoying. If gonna go 224/224 , I hear Thunder racings TR224 cam is the go. But as always, make sure to upgrade valve springs to suit and a set of hardened pushrods are a safe asset too. If your gonna go double row timing chain, its a bit more of a pain to fit than a heavy duty single or Ls2 chain.

Oh yeah, and for what its worth, the guys at hi-torque peformance recommend comp 222/224 in a stock stall ls1 - i've used this cam in a VT wagon and was also fitted and tuned by them too. At the lights, my foot was always flat out on the brakes holding it back from wanting to surge forward. And from memory sitting at 80km/h it surge noticably too.

I had this cam in my LS2 for a while but for Sydney inner city use and school holiday traffic jams that "Nothing too annoying" became very tedius and even though the tune had the car idling fairly smooth sometimes it would suddenly start loping as you were creeping in traffic, very annoying and almost dangerous.
Power from 2500 up was great but it did loose a bit down low.
Now run a very small 212/218 cam and love it for type of use my car gets, power from start to redline and fuel economy no worse than stock, city or country use.

There's a VCM 21 on eBay at moment and description says its the biggest size they have to suit stock stall. Specs 217/225 , .578 lift on 113 lobe. They claim 50kw gain , i personally aint seen how this cam performs but can view it on idle in a VE on you tube.
