In the petrol V8 Supercar days, some cars would pop flames and others like the HRT cars would trail flames on overrun. The cars trailing flames used Black Mamba mufflers and had 3 stacked tube baffles inside like a Borla muffler design. The inside area of the 3 stacked tubes would glow red hot and ignite any excess fuel in the exhaust stream. The 3" perforated tube mufflers like a hotdog design would pop flames but not trail flames throughout deceleration. A piece of 0.040" stainless tie wire fitted in the centre of the tail pipes will glow red hot and make side exit race car exhausts trail flames when tuned rich on overrun. E85 will throw flames but it's hard to see the bluish alcohol flames in daylight.
