Manifold glowing red

Ok so my uncle's car (s/c VT), manifold was glowing red, and he was just wondering is it normal for a car with a s/c engine to do that, sounds a bit sketchy to me, but just looking for some answers maybe some ppl with similar problems?

How was he driving the car before he noticed the manifold glowing and why did he open the bonnet in the first place?

He was working on the car all day fixing **** up etc, so id say he drove it pretty hard when taking it for a run.
