Manual Gear Box Noise ???

Hi all

Just wondering the manual 6 speed gearbox when placed in neutral and clutch out, does it have a habit of making a deep whirling grinding noise (almost to the point to where is sounds like it may be rattling) and when the clutch is pressed in it goes away.
Also is gearbox known for clunking at times when changing gears or taking your foot off the accelerator.
And last of all has anyone out there had problems trying to engage reverse when the box is cold. eg Won't go in or crunches.
I've noticed all the above since the car was bought new.

Your opinion would be apreciated.

Thanks

The whirring noise sounds like a noisy thrust bearing.

When your box is cold, try putting the gear lever into 1st gear first and then (without releasing the clutch) across to reverse, this should slow the synchros down and stop the crunching.

the whirring noise is the bearing on the input shaft
and according to Holden (Field Service mechanic) it is normal on the M6 trans
some are VERY noisy...comes standard with these trans

and your solution re reverse..spot on
but I can recommend a fluid replacement as helping here
on the SS, I replaced the tranny fluid with Castrol TransMax Z*
and it got 50% better..not perfect but better

*if you do this, don't forget the trans overfill procedure

hth

cheers

I have a VY V6 ute with the 5 speed gear box i had the same noise with the clutch and it is the thrust bearing. They fixed it and 2 weeks later i started getting other noises. I have taken back 2 holden again they pretented they didnt hear the noise and said there is nothing wrong with the clutch. They told me it has 2 really affect the car be4 they fix it. So no matter if holden fixes it, sum how it worse then wen it came in.

A faulty clutch slave cylinder could also cause it to be hard going into first and reverse, i have found that if you hold your foot on the clutch for 5 secs then select the gear it goes in straight away.
