just wondering can a mobile speed camera detect you from the other side of the road with a median strip in-between the roads ??

What sort of range did you think mobile radar units have?

You're diagram suggests the distance between your car and the police car was about three lane widths. That's well within the mobile's range. The median strip wouldn't matter a damn.
