Got a VT 99 Wagon,
Bought it a few months ago now but have an issue with it. It's under warranty from the local dealer. You know the one, 5 years/200,000 kms which ever comes first. Not worth the paper they're written on :bang:

When travelling around 80-100 km/h there is a terrible rumbling from the rear and there is evident shaking of the car. Took it up to the dealer who ran a diagnostic for $105 and found nothing. No surprises there  They advised me that a throttle body clean out and carbon clean may fix it but no guarantees. $270 to find out if it fixes it. Yeh right. I think i'll get a second opinion. Had a family friend who checked out the throttle body and it wasn't bad at all.

I've heard through the grape vine that there is an upgrade for the computer which cures the problem. Not that i know to much about the workings but i'm told that the problem is caused by the overdrive control in the computer running out of sync with the motor itself causing a shaking and rumbling coming from the car.

Has anybody come across this before or heard about this upgrade ??

Just want to know before i go back to the dealer.

Apologies if there has been a post on this before.

Cheers,

Stew. :)

Couldn't it be as simple as needing a wheel balance on your backs rims.....
Maybe one is bent....
Maybe your tailshaft needs balancing....
Take it to an independant mechanic to get their opinion...

Yeah, sounds more like a driveline problem over anything else, whip it down to a drive specialist, they will find the prob straight away

You've isolated your problem right there: rear of the car = definitely driveline. Could be tailshaft, diff, uni joints or even a simple wheel balance problem. I suggest you take minux's advice and go and see a driveline specialist. Once the problem is diagnosed have a look at your warranty book to see if you're covered (I can't remember what was honoured in the driveline area). Then it's just a matter of getting the dealer to agree to fixing it under warranty.

if all else fails, get someone to run it up on the dyno to that speed range. should be easy to isolate when the car is sitting still.

HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH MY 98 WAGON. NO SPECIFIC SPEED RELATED. MORE NOTICEABLE UNDER HEAVY ACCELERATION. ENDED UP BEING A RUBBER BUSH BEARING MOUNT ON THE TAILSHAFT AND CV JOINT AT THE DIFF.

driveline possibility's are stuffed centre bearing in the tailshaft or it's uni joints, stuffed cv joint or universal joint on an axle, diff could be in need of bearings/overhaul possibly a pinion bearing.

Bob, would his problems cause these driveline noises though?
