As the title suggests I have no reverse in my vr v6. It happened the other night when I shifted from reverse to drive a bit too eagerly and instead of going forward it just revved. I had to put it into Park then back to drive to get it to move.

However now my:

Neutral and Drive both make the car go
Reverse is Park
Park is Park

The only neutral I have is when its in neutral and the engine is off (makes it difficult when having to reverse off the front lawn, out of car parks, back down driveways...basically anything where reverse is usually used)

I've read about the 'sunshell' being cracked but i'm not really sure what this is. There is no grinding or weird noises and the car drives perfect apart from my confused gears. Any help as to a prompt solution would be great.

Cheers Jack

From what I have read, loosing reverse is one of the first symptoms of a failing gearbox (if you don't count the fact that reverse has failed as a failure in itself). You would probably be better off taking it to a transmission specialist.

If the sunshell has sheared you will lose all gears and have no movement except for a stiffish attempt by the car to move...and the nothing. Your problem may just be the selector linkage to the auto box has slipped...unusual but not unheard of. You will need to get under the car (on ramps...safely) and watch how the selector (drivers side) moves whilst someone in the car (engine off) moves the T bar. With a bit of luck it will be this.

Cheers Hako will give that a go this afternoon. That actually sounds like it could be the problem. What does anyone else think?

However now my:

Reverse is Park

Lets lift this up a level and we should get something straight - Park is Park and Neutral is not Park, as there is a Locking Pawl in Park to lock the output shaft of the transmission.

If you mean the Park Pawl is locking the Drive Shaft in the reverse position, then the linkage is out of adjustment!

I'm guessing you actually mean Reverse is Neutral?

Well when i put it in reverse i cant roll it by pushing like it is still in park which is why i said reverse is park...when the engines on i cant find any gear that will allow me to push it freely ie. backwards out of a car park. I have to turn the car to reds then put it in neutral in order for me to be able to push it. I appreciate the input :)

I'm no auto expert, but either the shift linkage is out of whack or bent and/or internal damage.

Check the linkage first! You may have a broken engine mount to cause this.

ok so is it an easy fix if its the linkage? like is it just a case of tapping back into place or is it more involved than that? and will i be able to see it all from under the car without removing anything?

Sorry for all the questions, I've never had anything to do with a transmission before

First thing you need to do is get the car up on ramps - I lost a good mate of mine when his car collapsed on him.
Once it is up on the ramps, crawl under the car and locate the gear change linkage where it connects to the transmission. Then I'd get someone to move the T bar from P to L whilst you watch what the linkage does at the transmission end. You should be able to pretty quickly figure out if it is actually working.....but really you need to get a Gregorys manual so you can check these things step by step.
